Professional haircare vs supermarket shampoos – what’s the difference?

You’ve probably heard your stylist encouraging you to make the switch from supermarket shampoos to professional products, but is there really a difference?

With salons closed across the country yet again, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is more important than ever. This is a key step to maintaining your hair’s health until you can see your stylist again.

We spoke to Society’s Georgia Bell and Trevor Sorbie’s Louise Foard to find out more…

First things first – are pro products actually better?

Unsurprisingly, their answers are a resounding YES on this one.

“Maintaining the integrity of your hair and keeping your colour doesn’t happen in just one appointment”, says Georgia. “It’s so important to me that my clients switch from shop bought shampoo to professional products - after all, you don’t buy a BMW and put it through a boil wash!”

Louise agrees, adding that it’s “essential that clients get that same salon finish when washing and styling their hair at home”.

OK, so the pros have confirmed that quality products are a must. But just what is it that makes professional haircare products better than their supermarket competitors?

Supermarket shampoos contain less of the good stuff

“Drugstore shampoos still contain ingredients found in salon products, but they only contain small amounts of them”, explains Louise. And that means you get better results from the professional brands.

There’s more, though, and it makes perfect sense when you think about it. We’ll let Louise explain:

“As professional products contain higher concentrations of the essential ingredients, a little product goes a long way.”

So, more of the good ingredients, and you get more uses from each bottle! Sounds good to us.

Professional haircare doesn’t cause damage

Typically, budget shampoos contain chemicals which can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause damage.

The best known offenders include sulphates (used to make shampoos lather) and sodium chloride (AKA salt!). Professional products avoid these options in favour of ingredients that may cost a bit more, but which sidestep the damage.

Professional haircare creates REAL results

“As well as chemicals which can strip your hair of their natural oils, drugstore shampoos also contain fillers which leave behind a waxy coating”, says Louise. “Basically, your hair feels soft but isn’t nourished from within!”

That’s right, supermarket brands might leave your hair feeling great, but it’s not for the right reasons. To counteract harsh ingredients, they contain other substances that mimic the feeling of healthy hair.

And “mimic” is the key word here, because they make the hair feel better without actually building integrity or health on the inside.

So, which products do our haircare pros recommend?

Georgia’s straight in with a fantastic KeraStraight combination. “I love the Volume Enhance Shampoo teamed up with Moisture Mist” she says. “They’re kind to your colour and make your hair feel amazing”.

And Louise is a fan of our moisture-rich range, recommending our Moisture Enhance Shampoo and Conditioner. She loves them because “their lightweight formula locks in moisture, leaving your hair shiny, smooth and also with added heat protection!”
